2014 Big Brothers Big Sisters Youth Outing

From Geoff Verges on June 14th:

Milwaukee Muskies Inc and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee co-hosted a youth fishing event on Saturday with the help of both of Smokey’s tackle shops.

20 Littles with well over 20 Bigs showed up to catch some panfish with their captains from Milwaukee Muskies Inc.

Attached are a few pictures of the catch.

Many, many special thanks go out to the men from Muskies Inc who devoted part of their busy weekend to fishing with the kids: Bryan Blanke, Roy Hinkforth, Mark Miller and Greg Sieren. These were the men who made the magic happen for the kids, along with their helpers who tagged along as first mates.

More thanks goes out to each and every volunteer who showed up from Big Brothers and Big Sisters to assist with check in and help provide lunch for the kids.

On the Muskies Inc side, both Jennifer Verges and Nancy Hinkforth helped with facilitating the event and assisting with the lunch afterwards.

Kids ended up fishing from the Smokey’s pontoon boats from about 10:00 to 12:00. And while we heard that the ‘toons caught 40-70 gills apiece (along with some bass), some of the youngsters couldn’t get enough and also fished off of Smokey’s piers to get more bluegills. There were even rumors of a 10 inch gill.

Anyway, it was a blast for everyone involved. Another thank you goes out to Smokey’s Muskie Shop for not only hosting this event, but also for their Veterans Outing that was running at the same time.

2014 Quad County – Milwaukee Challenge Results

On Opening Weekend, May 3rd and 4th, the Milwaukee Chapter reclaimed home lake advantage in the Quad County – Milwaukee Challenge on Pewaukee Lake. Six Fish were caught on Saturday, four from Milwaukee and two from Quad County Chapter. On Sunday at 11:50am, Mike Pokora added to the Milwaukee total with a 40 incher bringing Milwaukee’s total to 5 and Quad 2. Besides Mike’s big fish he also had a 34 incher on Saturday. Milwaukee Chapter members also reporting catching fish were Mike Danko – 34.5”, Russ Van Lieshout – 36”,” and Bob Petzke with a 32”. Quad County Chapter reported getting a 34” and a 34.5”. Milwaukee had 26 participants while Quad had 20 participants in the event. Thank You to Bob Petzke for coordinating the event.

The 28th annual Milwaukee Chapter vs. Quad-County challenge will be held on Saturday, May 3rd (7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) and Sunday, May 4th (7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.) on Pewaukee Lake. This is an unorganized event that simply awards the winning chapter the bragging rights and the traveling trophy for the year. The honor system is used to “register” fish and the Muskies, Inc. point system is used for length.

As with past challenges, participants will simply launch their boat where ever it is their convenience. You may start fishing before 7:00, but you cannot count fish caught unless it is after the 7:00 start. We usually eat lunch at Curly’s Waterfront at noon to get updated on how everyone is doing. At about 5:30 on Saturday our Chapter puts on a brat feast at Smokey’s. The boys from Ill. join us and a great time is had by all. At noon Sunday we have the trophy presentation at the Waterfront Pub and Grill.

If you’re interested and can make this two day commitment and represent our chapter, sign up at our general meeting in April. Chapter representatives are on a first come-first served basis. We take up to 30 contestants, and it is $5 to cover food and FUN. Contact Bob Petzke at 262-442-6260 or through the contact form below if you can not make the meeting.

2013 September Member Outing

On our Friday September 20th outing, Mother Nature dealt an early kick off to fall with it being a bit windy and a little chilly!!!! Trolling seemed to be the ticket as Lynne Dembiec took the Big Fish pot with a 36.75 incher. She also boated 2 other 35″ers. Steve Berg stuck a 34″ along with a pike casting. Afterwards, a good time was had at Smokey’s Muskie Shop. Thanks to Rick for keeping the shop open for us. Geoff and Jen Verges supplied the meal which was some awesome pulled pork!!  These outings are all about having fun, chasing Muskies and the camaraderie on and off the water.

In the future, if anyone is looking to host an event, pick a date and let the crew know. As President Craig Ader said “I am truly impressed with the cooks we have. If you have not attended one of these outings, you are missing out on a treat in so many ways.”

2013 Veterans Outing Report

August 31st brought about the Annual Veterans outing hosted by Chapter 35 on Pewaukee Lake.  This event was spearheaded by Gene Pokora with assistance from his wife Mary and son Mike.  Sign up was at 0700 with coffee and droughts served. This year saw 10 different veterans team up with 11 of our chapter member boats on Pewaukee Lake.  Fishing was reported to be slow with few follows sighted by most.  Geoff Verges reported moving several fish, with a few bites and his partner having a two muskies coming unpinned.

Jack Mueller’s 30″ Muskie

Craig Ader stuck a 34” Northern and two casts later got a 42” Muskie.  Veteran John McCaffey boated a 35” Muskie, and Veteran Jack Mueller boated a nice large mouth and a 30” Muskie.  Fishing was followed with a banquet at Post 449 of the American Legion Hall at 124th and Burleigh in Brookfield. A donation of $232 was made to the Fisher House Foundation in Ralph Anderson’s name as a result of donations and raffles from the event.  The Fisher House Foundation works to provide “a home away from home” for military families to be close to their loved one during hospitalization for an illness, disease or injury.  In the end, a great time was had by all, and a great way to say “Thanks” to some Veterans for serving our country.  Gene states that he is looking at moving this annual event from Labor Day weekend to later in September, and expresses his sincerest thanks to all the members that donated their time. If you would like to volunteer your time to take a vet out next year, please contact Gene Pokora.

2013 June Member Outing

This past summer on the water outings were scheduled for the 20th of each month on Pewaukee Lake followed with socializing at Smokey’s Muskie Shop.

June saw about 9 members participate with Greg Irwin chairing the event.   Rick Wyrwas won the big fish pool with his 37 incher caught during the outing.  He stuck a 38” fish earlier in the day before the outing.  There were reports of seeing quite a few fish, but nothing else being caught.

2013 Big Brothers Big Sisters Outing

On a windy and cool evening May 23rd, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee joined the Milwaukee Chapter of Muskies, Inc for another outing based out of Smokey’s Muskie Shop on Pewaukee Lake. Gene Pokora chaired the event with help from his wife Mary and son Michael (grillmaster), Nancy and Roy Hinkforth, Craig Ader, Steve Berg, Nick Gosh, Jim Dembiec, and Mike Phelps.

Stephanie from BBBS coordinated efforts from their side with pontoon rentals from Smokey’s, and the chapter shuttled the pontoons between the bait shop and the muskie shop. The first pontoon left the muskie shop in pursuit of panfish a little after 5:30PM with the last pontoon departing about 6PM. Panfish caught included perch, pumpkinseed, bluegills, and crappie with the best action early. Returning to the muskie shop a bit before 8PM, a warm meal of burgers and chili (and of course other fixings and dessert) hit the spot.

May 20, 2013 outing

Tim Blazek, Tom Blazek, Steve Berg, Nick Toole, and Mike Phelps made it out Monday night despite the threat forecast that day. The storm held off until later that evening.

Bass have been active but the muskies were mostly following. Tim and Tom watched a muskie they moved get plucked as a boat worked behind them. Cranks and blades moved fish and the west end revealed more than the east.
