2016 Quad County Challunge Recap

The 29th annual Quad County outing is now in the books. This year, with Mother’s Day landing on Southern Wisconsin’s opening weekend of game fishing, the Quad County Challenge between Milwaukee Chapter and Quad County (IL) Chapter of Muskies INC was a one day affair. Only 1 fish between both chapter was eligible to be counted, a 43″ fish caught by Steve Berg. There were some fish ineligible fish caught on Opening Day by Milwaukee Chapter members. Noteworthy fish boated were Brian Malack with a 33.5″, Marty Foreman with a 34″, and Steve Berg with a 40.5″.
A special thanks to Daelyn Petzke and Lynne Dembiec for all the help with the food after the outing.

2016 Larry Kleeba Challunge – Hosted by Milwaukee Chapter on Waukesha County – Lakes May 21-22

This year the Milwaukee Chapter will be hosting the Larry Kleeba Challunge on Saturday, May 21st and Sunday, May 22nd. Pewaukee Lake, Okauchee Lake, Oconomowoc Lake, Lac la Belle–all of these will be locations available to fish. Milwaukee Chapter will be hosting a cookout at Nettesheim Park on May 21st at 3pm. Trophy presentation will be at Nettesheim Park on May 22nd at 1pm, and all fish must be registered no later than 12:30pm. To register for the challenge itself, please contact Bob Petzke by the contact form below by May 6th.

Milwaukee Chapter decided to host the Challenge on our area lakes in May. This gives us a chance to introduce you to our fine southeast Wisconsin lakes and give the chapters up north an earlier start to their Wisconsin muskie season. In addition, recreational traffic is much lower in May than compared to June. We will have a 3PM meal at Nettesheim Park so to allow anglers an opportunity to fish the evening full moon. This was to create less hassle for those fishing to have to pull off the lake and relaunch. Nettesheim Park is located at the corner of Prospect Ave and Oak Street south of Pewaukee Lake. Nettesheim has good parking for trucks with boats, and also has a shelter in the event of adverse weather.

Pewaukee Lake has several launches around the lake. The West End Waukesha County launch in Naga-Wauke Park off of Maple Ave has ample parking. The last time I checked was $8 to launch. There is also a public launch at Smokey’s Muskie Shop off of Lakeview Blvd north of CTH SS. There are fees to launch at Smokey’s too. Okauchee Lake has a free DNR launch site, just north of State Hwy 16. Take CTH P – Wisconsin Ave to Lakeview Court and go north. Overflow flow traffic to Okauchee is directed to the Golden Mast with a fee charged by the Golden Mast. Both Okauchee and Pewaukee have establishments on the water to stop and get something to eat and drink. Oconomowoc Lake launch site is a very short distance from the Okauchee Launch. It also sits just north of HWY 16 and is off of CTH P – Wisconsin Ave. A recent check in March revealed that fees are $11.75 with attendant present, and $10 with no attendant present. Lac La Belle is in Oconomowoc and the launch for Lac La Belle is right north of Wisconsin Ave on STH Business 16 just west of downtown Oconomowoc. There is a launch fee for this launch and street parking is the norm.

The Lakes Country of Waukesha County is an affluent area that offers some nice hotel accommodations in the area, including but not limited to:

The Kleeba Challunge is a traveling tournament held annualy among the Wisconsin Chapters of Muskies, Inc. There are currently nine chapters. The tournament was named after a member of Headwaters chapter, Larry Kleeba, who held the position of “Director at Large”. Larry moved to the Conover, Wisconsin area from Illinois. He was well known in the area and had many friends in Muskies, Inc. He has been described as a party kind of guy who loved to fish for muskies and was very good at it. Larry died in a tragic car accident near his home, after which during a Musky Club Alliance meeting, it was decided to name this tournament in his honor.

Meeting February 23rd Steve Herbeck

When the discussion of top musky anglers comes into discussion Steve’s name invariably enters into the mix and the terms “legendary” and “innovator” are often brought up. He was recently mentioned in a vote by a panel of his peers as one of the top ten musky anglers of all time. With over 28 years of experience guiding and instructing from northern WI’s Vilas County–starting 28 years ago–to the Canadian Shield waters of the famed Eagle Lake for the past 22 years, Steve brings a wealth of new knowledge, patterns, and presentations.”This seminar won’t be an advertisement or entertainment but the real meat-and-potatoes overview of overlooked and sometimes contrary-to-many-popular-belief patterns and thoughts.  It will also give a preview of some new and exciting big fish patterns that have been developing more recently and emerging by the ever changing environment and ecosystem–especially on the Canadian Shield water of NW Ontario.”  1994 to date Steve and his clients have boated 43 muskies 40# – 50#+ on Eagle Lake ON and in the prior 6 years guiding in WI’s Vilas Co. 2 times guided clients to the largest musky boated in the state for the yr. with a 55 1/2″ 43# 6 oz. in 1987 and 53″ 47# 10 oz. in 1992. Steve brings to the stage knowledge and passion that is unique and contagious.  So come out and see Steve Herbeck present “Techniques to Landing Big Muskies”.  This is one you won’t want to miss!!  You can find us at  The Machine Shed – 7pm

January 26, 2016 at 7:00 PM  Capt. Chris Taurisano – When Preparation Meets Opportunity.

Chris is a southeast Wisconsin and northern Illinois multispecies angler that specializes in Muskie Fishing and runs his own “T-bone Guide Service” in the heavily pressured metro areas. Chris is a seminar speaker and has spoken at both the Chicago and Milwaukee Muskie Expos.  Chris began fishing with his Grandpa for Panfish at the early age of three.  In his teens he attended Camp Fish (started by Al Linder and the In Fisherman  Crew) every summer for a week, five years in a row, where he learned to become a better angler.  By 16 he had his own boat and traveled all over the Midwest, fishing with his Grandpa.  Despite his extensive fishing experience, he believes that he is always learning out on the water. Chris enjoys teaching and looks forward to sharing what he has learned.
