Milwaukee Muskie Expo Recap

MCMI had a great time at the Milwaukee Muskie Expo from Friday, February 12th to Sunday, February 14th.  We were given a generous donation from Team Rhino Outdoors and DK Lures to raffle off a DK Glitter Walleye, as well as donate 10% of their show sales to us. In the end, Team Rhino Outdoors was responsible for the club making over $700 at the expo, and that money will go towards stocking. We can’t thank them enough for their generosity to our club. And, to top it off, they are a great group of guys, and always a pleasure to deal with.  I know more than one chapter member who dropped some coin in their booth this past weekend.
A “Big Thank You” goes out to Brian Mirek for chairing the MCMI Muskie Expo Booth and to the rest of the volunteers that assisted: Mike Phelps, Steve Berg, Bob Petzke (and wife), James Kwapil, Andy Rosenau, Matt Saric, Dave Kegler, Craig Ader, and Greg Sieren

Ice Fisheree Recap

The MCMI ice Fisheree has returned.  It was held on Sunday Jan 31, 2016 at Curly’s Waterfront Bar on Pewaukee Lake and was a great success. Turnout was high and fun was had by all. There was a main raffle drawing held at the end of fisheree which featured 5 guided fishing trips and over $2500.00 in total prizes awarded.

Additionally, cash prizes we’re awarded in 4 fish categories as follows.

  1. Pike  –  30.5in.  –  Mike Koepp
  2. Bass  –  18.5in.  –  Mike Marinkovich
  3. Perch  –  13 in.  –  Dana Dement
  4. Panfish / Crappie  –  10 in.  –  Mike Kaatz

The money raised will help MCMI fund programs like MCMI Musky Stocking Program, Veteran’s Fishing Outing, and Big Brothers Big Sisters Fishing Outing.

These programs are not possible without the continued support of our sponsors, members and non member contributions. Going forward, we are already looking forward to next years event, which we anticipate being bigger and better.  Our goal next year will be to encourage all of our membership to help support the MCMI Ice Fisheree in any of the following ways – helping sell tickets, buy tickets, help in securing prize donations, or by volunteering your time.

With everyone’s help, this event can be an integral resource in helping support the financial health of our club as well as the club sponsored programs that we all enjoy through MCMI.

Thanks to all of those who helped make this event a success with special mention to Craig Ader, Nancy Hinkforth, Bob Petzke & Brian Mirek. And, last but not least by any means, the Curly’s Waterfront Bar Staff.

2016 Meeting Location Change – Jan and Feb Speaker Line Up

Our next meeting is Tuesday, January 26th.  We have moved our meeting location to the Machine Shed Restaurant in Pewaukee.    Location of the Machine Shed Restaurant can be found here:

January 26, 2016 at 7:00 PM  Capt. Chris Taurisano – When Preparation Meets Opportunity.

Chris is a southeast Wisconsin and northern Illinois multispecies angler that specializes in Muskie Fishing and runs his own “T-bone Guide Service” in the heavily pressured metro areas. Chris is a seminar speaker and has spoken at both the Chicago and Milwaukee Muskie Expos.  Chris began fishing with his Grandpa for Panfish at the early age of three.  In his teens he attended Camp Fish (started by Al Linder and the In Fisherman  Crew) every summer for a week, five years in a row, where he learned to become a better angler.  By 16 he had his own boat and traveled all over the Midwest, fishing with his Grandpa.  Despite his extensive fishing experience, he believes that he is always learning out on the water. Chris enjoys teaching and looks forward to sharing what he has learned.

February 23, 2016 at 7:00 PM  Steve Herbeck – Techniques to Landing Big Muskies

When the discussion of top musky anglers comes into discussion Steve’s name invariably enters into the mix and the terms “legendary” and “innovator” are often brought up. He was recently mentioned in a vote by a panel of his peers as one of the top ten musky anglers of all time. With over 28 years of experience guiding and instructing from northern WI’s Vilas County–starting 28 years ago–to the Canadian Shield waters of the famed Eagle Lake for the past 22 years, Steve brings a wealth of new knowledge, patterns, and presentations.”This seminar won’t be an advertisement or entertainment but the real meat-and-potatoes overview of overlooked and sometimes contrary-to-many-popular-belief patterns and thoughts.  It will also give a preview of some new and exciting big fish patterns that have been developing more recently and emerging by the ever changing environment and ecosystem–especially on the Canadian Shield water of NW Ontario.”  1994 to date Steve and his clients have boated 43 muskies 40# – 50#+ on Eagle Lake ON and in the prior 6 years guiding in WI’s Vilas Co. 2 times guided clients to the largest musky boated in the state for the yr. with a 55 1/2″ 43# 6 oz. in 1987 and 53″ 47# 10 oz. in 1992. Steve brings to the stage knowledge and passion that is unique and contagious.  This is one you won’t want to miss!!

2015 Fall Championship Open on Pewaukee Lake Results

Saturday was a beautiful day to be on the water chasing muskies. Nice wind, great clouds…etc. 10 teams showed up to compete for cash while chasing muskies. And in the end? I’d say that the field beat the muskies. 7 fish were registered during the event.

First place went to Craig Ader and Isaac Lakich when they doubled up with a 34.5 and a (fat) 38 inch fish. Congrats to the winners who pocketed a cool $1039.50 in prize money.

Second place went to Brian Mirek and Will Govin when they netted a beautiful 47.5 inch fish! They collected $535.50.

Besides those fish, Jackson Graham caught a 34.5 inch fish. The ice queen herself caught a 37 (Lorie Scherf). Mike Koepp caught a 36 incher. And not only did John Ellis score a 34 inch fish, he also went home with the brand new St. Croix Legend Series Slingblade rod!

I want to give a special thanks to Rick at Smokey’s Musky shop for helping host the event. I know that it was an early morning and Rick was there to talk shop about the lake and get suckers into livewells.

Another thank you goes to all the anglers who fished. Thanks to your entry fees, the club raised about $775 that will go directly back into the stocking fund for area lakes.

2015 Pewaukee Lake Stocking

Milwaukee Chapter of Muskies INC and Muskellunge Club of Wisconsin jointly stocked 200 Muskies into Pewaukee Lake on September 18, 2015.

To top that off, independent of MCMI/MCW’s efforts, Smokey’s Muskie Shop with their “Three Charlies Tournament” financially supported an additional 100 Muskies for Pewaukee Lake. Much to our surprise, they all came on the same truck from Gollon Fish Farm! MCMI and MCW with the permission of John Laimon, owner of Smokey’s Muskie shop, helped to distribute the Three Charlies Tournament’s 100 muskies.

300 total muskies were stocked around Pewaukee Lake. These were in addition to the muskies that the Wisconsin DNR stocked this year.

2015 Stocking Lac La Belle

Milwaukee Chapter of Muskies INC and Muskellunge Club of Wisconsin joined forces again for stocking efforts. The effort received funds from Milwaukee Chapter Muskies INC, Muskellunge Club of Wisconsin – Bob Baumann Memorial Stocking Fund, and Team Rhino Outdoors. 400-425 muskies were stocked into Lac LaBelle on Friday September 18, 2015. Members of MCMI, MCW and the Wisconsin DNR distributed the approximately 12″ muskies around the lake.

2015 Veterans Outing

Milwaukee Chapter of Muskies Inc hosted the 2015 Veterans Outing on Pewaukee Lake on Saturday August 29th. We had 10 boats take out 15 Veterans. Four Vets caught muskies with three of them having caught their first. Quite a few Vets caught bass and northern pike too. The muskies caught were 40″, 38″, 36.5″ and 36″. Lots and lots of follows were sighted and a few additional muskies were lost boat side. After fishing, a good lunch was served at Nettesheim Park and door prizes were given away. Thank you to the Veterans for your service to our country and thank you for a great time and memorable outing!!
